Food is an essential part of daily living. Our body is just like an engine that needs fuel and refuelling. The food we eat provides energy to carry out everyday tasks such as walking, moving, and doing our daily chores. The processes that help us live, such as breathing, heart function, and brain function, require energy. All this energy comes from the food we consume. Therefore, a healthy, balanced diet is an utmost necessity. A balanced diet consists of the right nutrients from food, in proportions that provide energy, repair tired and worn-out tissues, and maintain a reserve in the body for emergencies.
Our diet and eating habits are influenced by the region we live in, its weather, and the staple foods that grow there. A balanced diet is one that contains carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, along with minerals and micronutrients such as vitamins, in a balanced ratio and reasonable portions, as per one’s body type and needs.
In nature, a mother’s milk for her infants is the complete food; there is no substitute for a mother’s milk. It is a complete diet for the baby, providing essential nutrients the body needs to stay healthy and work efficiently. As we grow, we need to eat a variety of foods in reasonable proportions to achieve a balanced daily diet. A healthy diet begins with healthy eating habits and understanding individual needs. It is very much based on one’s lifestyle, profession and level of physical and mental activities.
With these opening remarks, we will continue learning more about balancing our diets and achieving maximum health benefits.
