Long-term diseases, also known as chronic diseases, are classified as non-communicable diseases. They are called non-communicable diseases because they do not spread in the community through disease-causing germs; rather, they result from a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental, and behavioural or lifestyle factors.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are prevalent at large in developed as well as in the developing and poor countries; present almost equally among rich and poor nations, and are known causes of loss of young population as these diseases are striking at an early age, leading to << premature deaths>>. Diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, a variety of cancers, and respiratory diseases such as asthma are the most prevalent in society. Children, adults, elderly population are all vulnerable to NCDs. The main reasons being nutritional deficiencies, lack of physical activities, use of tobacco in various forms and consumption of high levels of alcohol. Apart from these factors, lack of sleep and stress are the other two important contributors. The current statistics on the rise of NCDs across the globe are alarming and worrying. Approximately 15 million deaths in the world have occurred between the age group of 30-69 years during the preceding year.

Unfortunately, all these diseases are the result of rapid industrialisation, urbanisation, practising unhealthy lifestyles, unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, lack of recreational pursuits and, moreover, lack of sleep and adequate rest. Elevated blood pressure, increased blood sugar levels, obesity, and abnormal levels of blood lipids are all considered risk factors that can lead to a variety of chronic diseases. Longstanding chronic diseases lead to other complications and are a very significant burden on the health and well-being of an individual. Therefore, monitoring them with appropriate treatment and lifestyle changes is essential.

In this series, we will continue to discuss the specific disease and how we can prevent and manage various NCDs.

Food is an essential part of daily living. Our body is just like an engine that needs fuel and refuelling. The food we eat provides energy to carry out everyday tasks such as walking, moving, and doing our daily chores. The processes that help us live, such as breathing, heart function, and brain function, require energy. All this energy comes from the food we consume. Therefore, a healthy, balanced diet is an utmost necessity. A balanced diet consists of the right nutrients from food, in proportions that provide energy, repair tired and worn-out tissues, and maintain a reserve in the body for emergencies.

Our diet and eating habits are influenced by the region we live in, its weather, and the staple foods that grow there. A balanced diet is one that contains carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, along with minerals and micronutrients such as vitamins, in a balanced ratio and reasonable portions, as per one’s body type and needs.

In nature, a mother’s milk for her infants is the complete food; there is no substitute for a mother’s milk. It is a complete diet for the baby, providing essential nutrients the body needs to stay healthy and work efficiently. As we grow, we need to eat a variety of foods in reasonable proportions to achieve a balanced daily diet. A healthy diet begins with healthy eating habits and understanding individual needs. It is very much based on one’s lifestyle, profession and level of physical and mental activities.

With these opening remarks, we will continue learning more about balancing our diets and achieving maximum health benefits.

Infectious diseases are caused by disease-causing germs such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. They spread very quickly in the community through contacts, contaminated air and water, and are hence known as <<Communicable diseases>>. The spread of these diseases is due to either direct physical contact with an infected person or indirect transmission through airborne droplets, contaminated surfaces, and water.

When we breathe, a variety of disease-causing bacteria and viruses are carried into our mouths, noses, throats, and respiratory tracts. Infectious diseases such as leprosy, tuberculosis, and influenza spread through coughing, sneezing, and spitting in public places, as well as through contact with unwashed hands.

Advancements in medical science have given researchers a greater understanding, enabling them to develop new medicines to fight a variety of infections. However, the bug is becoming smarter than the man, and new challenges are emerging in the fight against infections. There are simple measures that can help to stop the spread of the infectious disease. Cleanliness, improved personal and public hygiene, improved sanitation, food safety and water quality are basic requirements. Littering on the streets, spitting, and open garbage bins are all food for the infectious organisms to grow.

Public awareness about disease control through cleanliness and hygiene is very important, and it is the responsibility of every citizen to participate in this mission and change from bad habits and practices that continue to contaminate the environment and spread diseases. Washing hands before every meal and intermittently is a good personal habit that can help keep infections at bay.

Vaccination programmes have been a boon to mankind. It has reduced and also eradicated very dangerous contagious diseases. More about vaccines and vaccination strategies in the forthcoming blogs.

Have you ever thought about how medicines are developed?

It’s a long journey that begins in the laboratory. A potential drug is either synthesised in the chemical laboratory or extracted from plant/animal cells. It can also be derived from other biological sources, such as microorganisms.

This newly discovered compound is undergoing thorough research to understand and explore its structure, properties, and potential biological activities that could qualify it as a <<future medicine>>.

All this development is not by chance but the result of intentional efforts to develop a medicine that can help millions of patients worldwide.

The potential medicine is called << New Chemical Entity (NCE) >>. It is then further evaluated in a laboratory through a series of experiments to assess its potential use and to develop it into a medicinal product, such as tablets, capsules, or injections. It undergoes a series of animal experiments to evaluate its safety. The potential medicinal product must demonstrate biological effects; therefore, experiments are designed to evaluate its biological activity. The potential medicine’s ability to alter a physiological function could lead to its development as a medicinal product. The criteria for developing the medicinal product are based on its quality, effectiveness and safety profile. Therefore, the potential medicinal products undergo a series of various research programmes in human subjects. All these research programmes are governed by strict laws and ethical research guidelines, ensuring the safety and rights of human subjects. The research and development cycle varies anywhere from 10 to 15 years, depending on the type of disease being targeted and the results obtained at each stage. More than 10,000 compounds are researched daily, of which 1 could become a medicinal product. It’s a long journey that requires a huge investment in money, human capital, laboratories, hospitals, doctors, and so on. Not to forget, several man-hours with an unending zeal and passion for the discovery of medicines, the passion that encompasses the highest human value, to give hope to millions of sufferers across the globe.

When you pick up the medicine next time from the pharmacy, even if it is the most commonly used painkiller that relieves your headache instantly, remember it is a product developed by scientists and their support teams who are unknown to the world and continue to treat several people daily across the globe.
